The game at Werder Bremen showed that a Sheffield Wednesday man can improve, but his ceiling is high

Sheffield Wednesday played Bundesliga side Werder Bremen in their final pre-season game on Friday.

Sheffield Wednesday played Werder Bremen in Austria on Friday, drawing 2-2 after four 30-minute quarters.

Danny Rohl’s side have now played four pre-season friendlies; beating Alfreton Town, losing to Brighton and then Red Bull Salzburg and then drawing with Bremen.

Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama showed their attacking prowess in the closing stages to get the Owls back on track against another strong opponent, with Sheffield Wednesday fans having plenty to say about Musaba and Gassama after the game.

Next up is a game against Leganes at Hillsborough before the start of the new season on August 11.

There has been a major change in the playing squad this summer, with nine new players arriving.

Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday first-team players will continue to make a big impact next season and Rohl will want to see his side show signs of improvement as well.

One player that could apply to more than most is Pol Valentin.

Pol Valentin at Sheffield Wednesday

Valentin joined Sheffield Wednesday last summer, eventually making 36 Championship appearances.

Many argued that Valentin was Sheffield Wednesday’s most improved player last round.

Under Rohl, in particular, playing in a more attacking team and in a more attacking right-back role, Valentin eventually became a starter at Sheffield Wednesday.

His performance against Bremen, however, showed that the Spaniard still has room for improvement with Sheffield Wednesday.

The Star gave Valentin, 27, a rating of 5/10, adding:

“We went up and down the right for Wednesday and put some nice balls into the box but also gave the ball away.”

One player can be the catalyst for Pol Valentin at Sheffield Wednesday

Valentin had the right back position locked down last season, largely due to a lack of competition at that position.

But Sheffield Wednesday have since signed Yan Valery from Angers and so Valentin now has fresh competition for his starting spot at Hillsborough.

Valery looks like a very interesting signing; he is an attacking-minded defender who can operate as a regular defender or full-back and has worked with Rohl at Southampton in the past.

Valery pushing him for a starting position will give Valentin extra motivation and his vast improvements from last season may suggest he can become an even better and more important player for Sheffield Wednesday next season.
