Ipswich Town ‘lead the race’ to sign Birmingham City star Jordan James as Blues ‘move towards’ Blackburn Rovers Sammie Szmodics deal

Ipswich Town are reportedly ‘leading the race’ to sign Birmingham City star Jordan James.

The Birmingham academy graduate, 20, has made more than 100 appearances for the St Andrews side and is expected to leave the Midlands club this summer following relegation to Sky Bet League One.

The 11-times-capped Wales international has reportedly attracted interest from Premier League side Newcastle United and Europa League winners Atalanta, but HITC have claimed Town are in pole position to sign the midfielder.

James, who scored eight goals in 42 appearances for Birmingham last term, has a year left on his contract with an option for another season.

Meanwhile, SuffolkNews’ media partners TWTD claim the Blues and Blackburn Rovers are “moving towards (a) deal” for striker Sammie Szmodics.

It was recently reported that Town have seen a bid rejected for the player who topped the Championship scoring charts with 27 goals last term, but TWTD believe no other club are in the running to sign the 28-year-old Northern Ireland international.

Rovers boss John Eustace speaking to Lancashire Telegraphsaid: “Listen, it’s up to the two clubs, not me.

“Sam was magnificent for us last year, I want to keep him. He’s a top player, I don’t want to lose him. But what will be, will be.

“He’s been a great servant to us no matter what. I’ve spoken to him a few times and he just wants to be fit and ready for the first games of the season.”

City host 2. Bundesliga outfit Fortuna Düsseldorf at Portman Road today for their second pre-season friendly (3pm).
