Wigan Warriors v Warrington Wolves players rated 4 score 9/10

Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves met at the Brick Community Stadium tonight in a battle of first and second in Super League, with Warrington coming out on top with a stunning 40-4 win.

After Hull FC shocked Wigan Warriors last week, it gave Warrington Wolves the opportunity to go top of Super League should they win by 20 points or more.

Dubbed by many as the biggest game of the Super League season so far, the game got off to a flying start when Liam Byrne’s first carry of the ball saw him dispossessed by a hard tackle from Paul Vaughan and Luke Yates.

It was a tackle that set the tone for an incredible first half. Here’s how each player fared in the 80 minutes following the famous Warrington Wolves victory.

FB: Zach Eckersley – 6

Mistake from a smart tackle but managed to clear to avoid conceding a try. Brilliant with ball in hand on the run, but went into touch on a promising tackle and gifted Thewlis the attempted interception.

WG: Abbas Miski – 5

Performed strongly from yardage but the ball rarely went his way.

WHAT: Liam Farrell – 6

Back at center and then had to move to idle half for much of the second half after O’Neill’s injury.

WHAT: Jake Wardle – 7

Dangerous catch on the left edge as always. He had to move to the right after O’Neill’s injury and continued to do well. Wigan’s only real threat in the second half.

WG: Liam Marshall -6

He tried really well and helped his attackers out of the area and showed that danger when he broke free late on.

SO: Jack Farrimond -5

Very quiet but cleverly worked from the false half. I made a dangerous break thanks to a clever move. His pass was intercepted for Ashton’s try.

SH: Harry Smith – 7

40/20 at the start of the first half was instrumental in changing the momentum of the game and Liam Marshall’s assist in the next set was even better.

PR: Liam Byrne – 5

Had the ball forced out of his hand on the first carry after a huge tackle by Vaughan and Yates. Atoned with some tough approaches.

HK: Brad O’Neill – 6

Defensively always good. Steady tackles from the mark and the second effort. Had his night ended early with what looked like a worrying injury.

PR: Luke Thompson – 7

Running with bright intentions. He seemed to have a bit between his teeth. Outstanding for Wigan.

SR: Junior Nsemba – 6

Such a hand to grab when carrying the ball. Helped him make valuable extra yards. The mistake of playing the ball at one end allowed Warrington to score the ball at the other end.

SR: Sam Walters – 5

Early handling error and was then substituted for impact forward from the bench. His showdown with Dufty was unfortunately among his highlights.

LF: Kaide Ellis – 5

I made some good downloads. He forced a fumble from Ben Currie.

exchanges
Ethan Havard -5

He carried hard and made an impact off the bench.

Patrick Mago – 6

The first haul saw him take four Warrington players with him and it was a welcome boost of energy for the crowd.

Tyler Dupree – 5

The first carry of the ball saw him break free but he was dragged down from behind.

Harvey Hill – 5

Fresh legs but did nothing of note in a game where Wigan were dominated.

FB: Matt Dufty – 8

Clever kick for Lindop’s try and his pass drew Abbas Miski for Lindop’s second. Missed pass for Matty Ashton perfectly executed. Constant reminders of why he has the most try contributions all season after picking up three assists. Late Sin Bin took the shine.

WG: Josh Thewlis – 8

He didn’t seem to know that Smith’s deep shot was 40/20 as he was happy to watch it. Failure to sue? He kicked well to compensate and then scored an intercept try as did fellow wing Matty Ashton.

WHAT: Rodrick Tai – 9

Dominant again in defense in first game since contract extension. His pressure on Zach Eckersley forced Wigan’s lazy pass which Josh Thewlis was able to intercept. Bagged one last moment tries to top a brilliant performance himself.

WHAT: Arron Lindop – 9

He had a really good try after just two minutes. The second try was even better as he came in and raced 35 meters to dive over. An incredibly bright talent for the future that Sam Burgess has shown a lot of faith in.

WG: Matty Ashton – 9

I cleared a shot from Harry Smith very well a couple of times. Brilliant anticipation saw him go wide with an interception attempt and he finished second as expected.

SO: George Williams – 7

He forced a handling error from Sam Walters with a brilliant tackle. He commands so much attention near the goal line and showed his leadership skills throughout.

SH: Josh Drinkwater – 7

The kicking game has been criticized before, but be sure to always test the inexperienced Eckersley. Combined well with Williams.

PR: Luke Yates – 9

He gave away a sloppy penalty at the start which allowed Wigan to get a foot in the game, but from that minute on he was almost perfect. He played huge minutes and did it brilliantly.

HK: Sam Powell – 7

Calm and controlled against his former club.

PR: Paul Vaughan – 7

He was asked to do a lot by Sam Burgess and he delivered.

SR: Matty Nicholson – 7

Another to quietly go about his business and did so well against his former club.

SR: Adam Holroyd – 7

He crashed over to score his second try in as many weeks and even Junior Nsemba couldn’t stop him.

LF: Ben Currie – 8

Always performing at 7/10 or better, Mr Consistent for the best part of a decade for Warrington.

exchanges
Zane Musgrove – 6

He did well to clear the ball when pushed into touch.

Jordy Crowther – 7

Mistake at the start of the second half, but he just played physical and made the difference.

Danny Walker – 7

He came on late in the first half and stepped it up nicely, a trend that continued into the second half.

Max Wood – 7

Huge impact off the bench when carrying the ball. Lots of yards after contact.
