Sam Burgess gives a controversial verdict on the key decision in Wigan v Warrington Wolves

Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess has had his say on the decision to show Matt Dufty a yellow card in his side’s demolition of Wigan Warriors.

It was a night that could prove pivotal in the Super League season, with Warrington moving to the top of the table.

Wolves scored seven tries in Wigan’s first home defeat in over a year in a ruthless performance from start to finish.

Matt Dufty was undoubtedly one of the stars of the night, bagging tries with both hands and boot.

He is currently third in the league for try assists – just one behind Marc Sneyd and Mikey Lewis, who both play in the halves – and is easily the league’s best meter producer with 3537 and an incredible 866 ahead of closest competitor.

However, Burgess’ side finished the game with 12 men after Dufty was booked for a ‘tackle’ on Liam Marshall (although this did not stop Rodrick Tai scoring later on).

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Sam Burgess gave his thoughts on the decision to card Dufty.

He said: “I don’t agree with that because I mean I think we’re all looking at the same thing, then we can see that there’s no malice.

“If anything, I think the player is hitting the ground rather than Matt Dufty getting his head in the ground, so hopefully we’ll get some common sense out of it.

“We all know the welfare of the player is the most important thing, but perhaps the question has to be asked of the player about the position he has placed himself in.

“That’s my opinion outside of the live call, I’ll accept any disagreement, but that’s what I thought.”

Warrington Wolves will now await the match review committee’s verdict on the incident, which will be revealed on Monday.
