Sam Burgess gives controversial verdict on key decision in Wigan v Warrington Wolves

Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess has given his opinion on the decision to give Matt Dufty a yellow card in his side’s demolition of Wigan Warriors.

It was a night that may prove to be pivotal in the Super League season, with Warrington moving top-of-the-table.

The Wolves scored seven tries in Wigan’s first home defeat for over a year in a ruthless performance from start to finish.

Matt Dufty was undoubtedly one of the stars of the night, setting up tries with both his hands and his boot.

He’s currently third in the league for try assists – just one behind Marc Sneyd and Mikey Lewis, who both play in the halves – and is easily the league’s top meter maker, with his 3537 an incredible 866 ahead of his nearest competitor.

However, Burgess’ side finished the game with 12 men after Dufty was handed a yellow card for a ‘tip tackle’ on Liam Marshall (although this didn’t stop Rodrick Tai scoring late on).

After the game, speaking to Sky Sports, Sam Burgess gave his opinion on the decision to give Dufty the card.

He said: “I disagree with it because I mean I think we’re all watching the same thing then we can see there’s no malice to it.

“If anything, I think the player head butts the ground rather than Matt Dufty putting his head in the ground so let’s hope we get some common sense with that.

“We all know that player welfare is the most important thing, but maybe the question has to be asked of the player about what position he’s put himself in.

“That’s my view off the live call, I’ll accept any disagreements but that’s what I thought.”

Warrington Wolves will now await the Match Review Panel’s verdict on the incident, which will be revealed on Monday.
