What is Danny Rohl’s strongest Sheffield Wednesday XI as it stands

Sheffield Wednesday open their Championship campaign against Plymouth Argyle on August 11.

Sheffield Wednesday have two weeks to go before the start of the 2024/25 Championship season.

It is the first full season under Danny Rohl, who is entering his first full season in charge.

The German boss has brought in nine new players this summer and has overseen four pre-season friendlies, the latest being a 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen.

Sheffield Wednesday’s strongest XI under Danny Rohl right now

Rohl has a toss up between 4-2-3-1 and a 5-2-2-1 formation; The former he played with for most of last season and this pre-season so far, and the latter as the one who overcame Sheffield Wednesday last season.

A 4-2-3-1 formation looks more likely as things stand and there is no doubt that James Beadle starts in goal.

There’s also no doubt that when he’s fit, Di’Shon Bernard is the Owls’ best center back, although his best partner remains to be seen.

Michael Ihiekwe performed well last season and is probably the best bet to start alongside Bernard in a full XI, although centre-back remains an easy position.

At full-back, there is a little more uncertainty, especially on the right, with Yan Valery arriving to give Pol Valentin new competition; if Valery can live up to the hype, maybe he’ll prove better than Valentin, who still has room for improvement.

In left, Marvin Johnson remains the strongest option; I haven’t seen enough of Max Lowe in recent years to make a case.

Of the two midfield positions, Barry Bannan certainly occupies one, although last season partner Will Vaulks leaves a bit of a gap in the middle and one that will be filled by either Nathaniel Chalobah or Svante Ingelsson.

Given his experience in English football, Chalobah is perhaps the strongest option as it stands.

In the three attacking midfield positions, Rohl has far more options than he had at the start of the summer, with Olaf Kobacki and Jamal Lowe able to operate in those positions, as well as the likes of Josh Windass, Anthony Musaba and Djeidi. Ghassama; Musaba and Gassama both impressed against Werder Bremen.

It looks like those five will share the starting roles throughout next season, which will allow players to rest and keep the press high.

Given his second-tier experience, Lowe looks a stronger option than Kobacki and Windass as well, although he is perhaps the best option to start as a lone striker.

Musaba showed promise last season. His game has improved, along with Gassama’s, although Musaba certainly looks the more complete player for Sheffield Wednesday right now.

Above, Bailey Cadamarteri looks like he could have a good 2024/25 campaign after showing promise in pre-season.

There’s also Michael Smith, after the big forward came into high school towards the end of last season, and Charlie McNeill, although he looks set to play a back-up role next season as he gets to grips with Championship and first-team football .

Mallik Wilks appears to be out of favor and possibly on the move this summer.

Here’s what Rohl can see as his strongest Sheffield Wednesday XI when everyone is fit…
