Bristol City 2-1 Exeter City live: Reaction as Robins claim fourth win of pre-season at HPC

Hello and welcome to this afternoon’s live blog as Bristol City return to action just 15 hours or so after their 3-0 win over Cheltenham Town last night. Yes, this will be a completely different group of players in action.

League One Exeter City are the opponents at the HPC and hopefully this will be another useful exercise for Liam Manning and co. to really assess the state of play with their team, given that the start of the Championship season is now just two weeks away.

Fally Mayulu, Sam Bell and Kal Naismith are among the players not involved at Cheltenham last night and will almost certainly play a part in today’s game.

We will have live updates from HPC throughout the contest. Stay tuned.

Full time: Bristol City 2-1 Exeter City

Not the most entertaining game, especially in the first half, but two great finishes from Harry Cornick are enough for the win as City get more much needed minutes at the feet of the players.

Bajic forced a save

Magennis cuts inside and almost finds the same corner where he put his penalty, but a slight deflection allows Bajic to make a good save.

GOAL: Bristol City – 2-1 Exeter City (Magennis)

Josh Magennis converts the penalty.

Penalty Exeter

The referee blows for handball. From this it appeared that Joseph James was the offender.

Almost a third

Nelson finds himself free to have a shot which is saved, but the follow-up falls to Stokes, who can’t get to guide it into the goal.

On target from Benarous

The substitute gets a shot wide but it’s straight into the gloves of Joe Whitworth.

City changes

Kal Naismith and Harry Cornick came on for Ayman Benarous and Joseph James.

GOAL: Bristol City – 2-0 Exeter City (Cornick)

What a goal from Harry Cornick! The ball falls to the attacker on the volley and he finds the back of the net.

Click on the roof of the grid

Mayulu rises highest at a deep corner from Taylor Gardner-Hickman, but his header falls into the roof of the net.

GOAL: Bristol City – 1-0 Exeter City (Cornick)

Deserved goal for City. Raekwan Nelson makes great work down the left and puts in a cross that falls to an unmarked Harry Cornick to finish.

Nice play by Josh Stokes

The new Robin scrambles and produces a decent cut that is cleared for a corner.

Second half underway

Triple substitution for City. Callum Wood, Tommy Backwell and Raekwan Nelson continue. Zak Vyner, Joe Williams and Sam Bell are gone.

Half time: Bristol City 0-0 Exeter City

The city is the better part of the two, but so far nothing has been reported.

Easy catch for Stefan Bajic

Millenic Alli takes a shot but it’s an easy catch for Bajic, mainly thanks to a great save from Vyner to put Exeter out.

Exeter flash a shot well wide

Well, way off the mark.

Very little to comment on

Very little action so far hampering City’s two chances. Exeter failed to get anywhere near the 18-yard box as City struggled to find the last bit of quality.

Almost for McCrorie

McCrorie rises highest at a corner but his effort hits the crossbar, Mayulu unable to convert the follow-up.

Sam Bell denied

A great run down the right by Harry Cornick, who puts in a terrific delivery for Sam Bell, which stings the gloves of Exeter keeper Joe Whitworth.

YOU START!

We are in progress at HPC.

How City line up this afternoon

Liam Manning on Tommy Conway and transfers

Tommy Conway will again play some part in this afternoon’s pre-season friendly as the striker continues to train with the under-21s who rejected Bristol City’s latest contract bid. An exit seems the most likely outcome, but how imminent a departure could be is not yet clear.

Liam Manning was asked about the latest situation with Conway, as well as his transfer plans and hopes for the final month of the transfer window.
