Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard under investigation by HMRC over £100,000 tax

Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard is being investigated by HMRC over £100,000 in unpaid tax. The acting firm he runs was set up to manage his post-Corrie earnings and went into voluntary liquidation last year, leaving him with a £101,554 tax and VAT debt.

Beverley and her husband Jon McEwan also failed to repay £114,000 of director loans from their company, JMBJ Limited. Administrators are now investigating the business, including the couple’s failure to repay these loans.

They are also investigating his non-payment of tax debts. The liquidators have confirmed in recent documents that neither the loans nor the fees have been repaid, the Mirror reports.

They stated: “We carried out an initial review of the company’s affairs, including seeking information and explanations from directors through questionnaires, questioning the company’s accountants, examining the company’s bank statements and other records.

“This initial assessment revealed matters which the liquidators considered merited further investigation in relation to the director’s loans. As a result, the liquidators undertook further reviews. They make inquiries with the principals about the balance due.

“Insufficient funds have been made to permit a distribution to creditors at this stage. Due to ongoing investigations, it is currently uncertain whether sufficient funds will be available for a distribution to creditors.”

Bill Roache, who plays Ken Barlow, is struggling with a bill approaching £546,000. Beverley, who played the character Liz McDonald in Corrie from 1989 to 2020, spoke candidly about her departure from the soap last year.

While appearing on the How to be 60 podcast last year, Bev opened up about what made her stick with the show and what ultimately led her to leave. She explained: “I felt the scripts weren’t what they used to be. I’m trying to be diplomatic.”

When asked by the hosts if she was able to quit before the work started, it drained her enthusiasm and turned her spirits down. She clarified: “I wasn’t unhappy; it’s hard to put into words. But years ago, we used to get the scripts and you’d open them up and think, “Oh my God, this is amazing. I can’t believe I’m going to film this, and then for me, well, first of all, they didn’t write as much for me because I was older, and that really got to me.”
