Leeds United players like Bogle, Rutter and Byram impress in Schalke friendly win

Leeds United (4-2-3-1)

1 Illan Meslier

Withstood a decent one-on-one effort well when Schalke got in behind, but the distribution was found lacking at times, notably in two instances when he switched to Jayden Bogle. 6

2 Jayden Bogle

Excellent first start in Leeds colours. He completely dominated his fight with Anton Donkor in both directions. A real asset in the final third and provided another assist for Mateo Joseph. He has timed his challenges very well and provides a reliable option. It looks a stylish addition. 8

14 Joe Rodon

Not as flashy as Bogle and he committed a turnover in the second half, but he bounced back from that incident and generally looked a step up all afternoon. 7

39 Max Wober

He abandoned the backline to press a Schalke forward, which exposed the defense to a good opportunity for the natives. Picked up yellow for a strong challenge but was generally decent in defence, always providing an option for team-mates and tackling opponents well. 6

3 Junior Firpo

He didn’t quite get the looks at the attack he wanted. He could be heard clamoring for the ball in space, but it wasn’t always played the way he wanted. No dramas on defense, won his battles, just didn’t get a chance to shine for a higher grade. 6

4 Ethan Ampadu (b)

A combative performance from the skipper. Made three or four mistakes in a highly entertaining midfield battle. Vocal as usual. Not quite the influence he would want on the game. A memorable dribble in the box caught the eye. 6

8 Joe Rothwell

He went under the radar overall, but caught the eye at times with his passing and deep drives. He could be a slugger who gets better as he gets more minutes under his belt. An impressive curling pass found Bogle before the first goal. 7

29 Wilfried Gnonto

A good afternoon for the Italian. Involved in most of the good stuff Leeds put together and had more than one look at the goal he should have scored with. 7

24 Georginio Rutter

A little slow to start but once he unlocked the cheat code it was the best heel ever. He created chances in the first half but saved what he could for after the break. Schalke could barely put a glove on him and the superb assist for Joel Piroe was one of many superb deliveries in the final third. 8

11 Brenden Aaronson

Presented with a nice opportunity by Rutter in the first half. He got into a one-on-one on the corner but his effort was soft. He continued to fight and graft, but came in and out of the match without a huge impact. 6

19 Matthew Joseph

Keep the show on the road. Not always involved in the action, but he remained alert and waiting in the box when the ball fell to him. When he did, he either tested the keeper or scored. So confident. 7

Substitutes

21 Alex Cairns

26 Karl Darlow (enabled for Meslier h/t)

He was not asked to do much, even less than he was put in Meslier’s way in the first half. He stood up and caught what needed to be caught. 6

5 Pascal Struijk (enabled for Wober h/t)

As Leeds grew in control of the game, the second-half captain had less and less to do. Nothing of note came his way. 6

7 Joel Piroe (in place of Aaronson 57min)

Kept at the front of the battle with Joseph and scored a wonderful striker goal at the back stick. He showed good pace and got in behind for a decent second chance as well. Attention-grabbing connecting game. 7

25 Sam Byram (enabled for Firpo h/t)

A truly impressive return from the substitute. He entered at half-time, but immediately found the rhythm of the game. He won most of his battles and cleared possession so well in the opposition half for Leeds attacks. 8

30 Joe Gelhardt (in place of Joseph 72 min)

The odds are still not good enough for him. He remains committed to the cause and plays a role in the build, but his sights on the goal are so often loaded or muffled. 6

44 Ilia Gruev (hon for Ampadu h/t)

Another strong performance from the bench today. Picked out several decent passes from deep which brought Leeds into attack. Always good with his approach. It will be a good battle if it is him against Ampadu next season. 7

50 Charlie Crew (enabled for Rutter 72 min)

The game became quite thin in the latter stages and the Wales international was not seen on the ball much. 6

51 James Debayo (on for Bogle 72min)

Stable. Things have been checked. Nothing too good or bad that caught the eye as the match wound down. 6

56 Luca Thomas (for Gnonto 84min)

Too late for a sign. N/A

76 Sam Chambers (on for Rothwell 84 mins)

Too late for a point but looked lively and could have had his second goal of the summer. N/A
