Pilgrims walk 35 miles to Coventry Cathedral, raising money

PILGRIMS arrived at Coventry Cathedral after walking 35 miles from Leicester to raise money.

Pommie Pilgrims raise money for Derbyshire church toilets, kitchen and a warm space by visiting all 42 Anglican cathedrals.

Corrinne and Jo arrived at the city’s cathedral to a warm welcome from Canon Nitano Miller.

All Saints Church in the Peak District village of Youlgrave is a Grade I listed building built in 1155 and missing some key amenities.

The group aims to raise a total of £42,000 for the renovations.

The Revd Canon Jane Clay, Chair of the Pommie Pilgrimage Organizing Group, said: “Our hope to connect Youlgrave with every cathedral in the country through pilgrimage is a huge challenge and feels like an impossible task, but one step at a time, together we will get there.

“We don’t expect to raise this amount of money by sponsoring a penny a mile, but if you can spend more than a penny on our toilets, please get in touch.”

Corrinne Barnes added: “I moved to beautiful Youlgrave in the Channel Islands 4 years ago and being a very keen hiker, the Pommie Pilgrimage seemed like the ideal opportunity to give something back to my ‘new’ home.

“When we first thought about which leg to do, Leicester to Coventry seemed the most practical as my son lives in Leicestershire and would be well placed to act as a support team/dog handler.

“On further reflection it seemed even more fitting as my maternal grandmother was born in Leicester and brought up in Hinckley.

“I had never visited either Leicester or Coventry Cathedral, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to see them both… even if it meant I would have to go from one to the other to do it.”
