Liverpool transfer news as Anthony Gordon ‘reopens’ talks and Arne Slot identifies ‘top target’

Liverpool are now the only Premier League club not to have made a transfer move so far – but work is being done behind the scenes on possible deals. Sporting director Richard Hughes has already hinted that August could be the busiest time in the market.

It remains the case that Liverpool could do with a centre-back, while a holding midfielder and striker would be ideal. As for the name, however, I have so far lacked exact links.

The rumors, however, continue to flow. Here’s Liverpool.com’s verdict on the transfer gossip swirling around the Reds today, including more on Anthony Gordon and a new claim about a centre-back.

Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United)

Liverpool have begun negotiations with Newcastle for England winger Gordon, reports Caught Offside. The Magpies have made it clear, however, that the 23-year-old is not for sale.

In addition, Newcastle are keen to extend Gordon’s contract until 2029, with talks over a renewal said to be ready to take place. In addition to Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea are said to be keeping a close eye on things.

The only way Gordon will get a move is if he doesn’t sign a new contract with Newcastle. His contract is only valid for two more seasons and thus the North East side will be backed into a corner where he does not make an extension.

Liverpool.com says: Gordon would be a top addition for Liverpool, but the chances of that happening this summer are slim. Perhaps in the future it is one that could be revisited.

Gleison Bremer (Juventus)

Arne Slot has made Juventus and Brazil centre-back Gleison Bremer his ‘main target’ this summer as the Reds boss aims to strengthen his defence, according to TEAMtalk. The Reds are understood to have assessed a range of defenders and concluded that the 27-year-old is the best player who could realistically be available this window.

Bremer is under contract until 2028 and Juventus do not want to sell him. However, Liverpool are said to be ready to make a “big offer” which could change that position.

Liverpool.com says: The Reds were linked with Bremer before he moved to Juventus, so it’s a fairly easy link to make. At 27, however, he feels like an unlikely target. Younger options would make a lot more sense, as was the case with Leny Yoro.
