We visited Coventry Street, voted worst for an easily identifiable problem – and residents identify the same problem

Upper Eastern Green Lane was voted worst for potholes by city residents – and it’s not hard to see why. Even in the Eastern Green area, the street looks like the worst paved road by far.

It’s puzzling when you consider that nearby Broad Lane is much busier and yet it’s in much better condition. All things considered, Coventry is doing pretty well with the condition of its streets.

The worst example I witnessed was in Halifax, West Yorkshire, where some streets were so abysmal I feared my car would bottom out. However, Upper Eastern Green Lane was exceptionally poor by the city’s standard.

During my visit, I saw a mess of fill-in and bodge jobs in desperate need of a full work schedule. Residents agree, with one saying a dip in the road near a manhole cover means he hears a thud from every vehicle that passes his house.

Asked why he thought the road had deteriorated so much, the resident, who declined to be named, said: “I think it’s a few things.

One resident said it got to the point where the pavements needed to be completely repaired

“There are a lot of heavy vehicles and agricultural vehicles that come here, which just adds to the wear and tear on the road. And that will only get worse with the new developments nearby. Not only the road needs to be repaired, but also the sidewalks.”

One of the problems reported is that, although the road is treated as a local access road, in reality it is used by motorists as a thoroughfare to bypass Broad Lane. This results in cars speeding excessively on what is a very straight stretch of road.
