‘No data’ to show peak closures have caused increase in fly tipping, council claims

THERE is no evidence that the closure of three Bradford borough peaks has led to an increase in fly-tipping, according to Council bosses.

Bradford Council leaders were asked at a recent meeting whether the authority’s latest budget took into account the costs of managing an increase in tipping following the closure of landfill sites at Golden Butts (Ilkley), Sugden End (Crossflatts) and Ford Hill (Queensbury).

Councilor Neil Whitaker (Green, Craven) asked: “Does the budget approved by the full Council, but opposed by Green councillors, take into account the possible additional costs to the Council of managing the additional muscle turnover as a result of the three closures? Bradford District HWRC Places?”

He also asked if the Council expected any additional costs from cleaning up fly swatters this year.

A response from Sarah Ferriby, Healthy People and Places executive, said: “There is no data to suggest that residents could or will fly as a result of the HWRC closure.

“Fly-tipping is an illegal activity that will result in the offender being prosecuted. Fly casting volumes have not increased, but are always monitored throughout the year.”

She added: “Fly-tips dealt with under existing budgets always more reports. Perception may have increased, but I haven’t noticed any increase. We constantly monitor how much is collected and where it is collected from.”
