Matt Peet was “embarrassed to be associated” after Wigan Warriors were hammered by Warrington Wolves

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet was a very unhappy man after his side were comfortably beaten by Warrington and lost their position at the top of the table.

The Wire beat Wigan Warriors 40-4 to go top of the Super League table themselves this weekend.

A seven-try display saw excellent performances from the likes of Luke Yates, Adam Holroyd and Matt Dufty, but Wigan were second best in many aspects of the game.

Asked on Sky Sports after the game if he felt his side ever had a foothold in the game, Matt Peet said: “No, I don’t think we did.

“We made too many basic errors and defensively we were not at our best either. Now it’s a tough night for us, I took it on the chin. We will certainly look to improve from this.”

Peet was also asked what the biggest disappointment of the night was for him and he replied: “The score really. I think, especially playing in front of our home fans, but whenever we prove ourselves as a team, we’re embarrassed to be associated with that score.

“It’s a fine line between being good and being really poor. We’ll go away and look at ourselves and we’ll be better.”

“I think there are differences between this week and last week. Tonight, I thought our commitment was there, but we were bad with the ball and from the back, especially on the edges, we defended it out of our system.”

Asked how he reacts to the result, Peet said: “I look at myself first. We will be consistent, we will not overreact.”

Asked to elaborate on “he looks at himself,” Peet continued: “Every little thing, the selection, the trade, the week. We do this all the time, it’s part of the job.

“But you definitely focus more when you’re beaten like that.”
