John Fleck ‘back at Rangers’ as ex-Sheffield United player weighs up transfer future

Free agent John Fleck is working out with the Rangers again as he weighs his next move.

The 32-year-old former Ibrox wonder has been training at Auchenhowie as the midfielder looks to bounce back from an injury-plagued year at Blackburn Rovers, according to the Daily Record. Fleck signed a short-term deal with the Ewood Park club in February but was forced off just 17 minutes into his debut after picking up a knock to the shin. That ruled him out for the rest of the season, robbing the former Scotland star of the chance of an extended contract.

Now Fleck is developing his fitness in Glasgow after spending the last 12 years of his career down south. The five-time capped playmaker came through the ranks at Ibrox and was even hailed as Scotland’s answer to Wayne Rooney. However, the nephew of former Gers favorite Robert Fleck failed to fulfill his potential at Rangers and began his career with Coventry City in 2012 after a short loan spell at Blackpool.

Fleck amassed almost 200 appearances for the Sky Blues and was named Player of the Year in his final season at the club, before joining Sheffield United in 2016. The Rangers wonderkid picked up several personal honors during his eight years great success with the Blades, playing a key role in the club’s return to the Premier League after a 12-year absence.

Fleck was a mainstay under Chris Wilder as Sheffield United climbed the table to finish ninth in their first season back in the top flight. But after nearly 300 appearances for the club, Fleck has fallen out of favor over the past two years and cut ties with the club for Blackburn earlier in the year.

Now he is considering his options after attracting interest from clubs in Scotland and England. And Gers boss Philippe Clement will have the chance to rule the academy graduate as Fleck is put to work.
