Former Liverpool man makes surprise appearance as Gary Neville considers summer move

Former Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom has made a surprise appearance at Salford City. The 31-year-old came through the ranks at Liverpool’s academy and made a total of 22 first-team appearances during a seven-year spell at Anfield.

However, he had loan spells during his time at the Merseyside club, including Derby County, Norwich City, West Brom and Red Bull Salzburg, before completing a £3million move to Derby in 2017. After left the Rams in 2021, took a two-year hiatus from football after being stabbed in an unprovoked attack in 2020, which he admitted ruined his career.

“It was frustrating because when I got out of the hospital after about three days, I had a couple of surgeries, it was like my body wasn’t the same,” Wisdom told The Beautiful Game Podcast in May. “I tried to get back into football and it wasn’t the same, I wasn’t getting the same power in terms of strength or speed.”

Wisdom suffered headaches after being stabbed in the head and his breathing was also affected after he was left with fluid in his lungs. In 2023, he signed for Warrington Town, where he spent one season and helped them to 12th in the National League.

The right-back is apparently hoping to return to the Football League and secure a deal with Salford, which would be the ninth club of his career. Wisdom is currently on trial with the League Two outfit, owned by Manchester United legends David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.

He was in action for Salford as they beat Everton 2-1 in a pre-season friendly at the Peninsula Stadium on Saturday. James Garner scored the opening goal for Everton, while Ben Woodburn and Dan Chesters scored the goals for Salford.
