The speed limit is set to be reduced in the way of a fatal accident

Plans have been proposed to reduce the speed limit on a stretch of road where a significant number of fatal crashes have occurred. Bath and North East Somerset Council is consulting on proposals to change the speed limit along sections of the A368 between Marksbury and Ubley.

Since 2014, there have been 53 collisions along the A368 in Bath and North East Somerset resulting in injuries. 14 people were killed or seriously injured.

Potential changes outlined in the proposal include reducing the speed limit from 50 mph to 40 mph in non-residential areas, reducing a speed limit from 40 mph to 30 mph on approaches to residential areas, and reducing the speed limit from 30 mph to 20 mph in areas residential.

The council says the proposals aim to improve the safety of the A368 by introducing speed limits that better reflect the dangers of the road, which passes through villages, has narrow sections and sharp curves. The aim is also to encourage more active travel by making the highway safer for people to walk, drive and cycle.

Current uses of the A368

The A368 is one of the main roads through the south and west of Bath and north-east Somerset. It runs from Marksbury to Ubley on the B&NES, connecting travelers from the east with the A38, which runs north to Bristol Airport and south to Bridgwater, the M5 and beyond.
