Investigation ongoing as 40-year-old man dies after being hit by car with two suspects arrested

A man has sadly died after being hit by a car in Tameside.

The crash happened on Stockport Road in Ashton-under-Lyne at around 11.55pm on Wednesday (April 24). Officers responded to reports of a collision between a pedestrian and car, a Greater Manchester Police spokesman said.

Tragically, the pedestrian – a 40-year-old man – died after being rushed to hospital. His next of kin have been informed.

A 29-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Police said a 23-year-old later himself.

He was also arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Both have since been released on bail as investigations into the incident continue.

A cordon was put in place on Stockport Road near the junction with William Street following the crash on Wednesday night. Footage showed officers from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit carrying out work at the cordon as the road was closed for several hours.

Debris from the incident could be seen on the road. A Specialist Operations Incident Command van was also photographed at the scene.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the crash or anyone with footage to come forward. Officers can be contacted on 0161 856 4741 quoting log 4160-24/4/24.
