The Met Office is predicting a heatwave in Cornwall as temperatures soar

Cornwall is bracing for a rise in temperatures over the coming days. The Meteorological Office predicts a heat wave that will affect areas of the county with the mercury set at 25C.

The forecaster said the heatwave threshold is reached “when an area records a period of at least three consecutive days with maximum daily temperatures reaching or exceeding the heatwave temperature threshold.” Cornwall has a heatwave threshold of 25C, which is set to be reached from tomorrow (Monday, July 29) to Wednesday (July 31).

Locally, Truro is set for highs of 25C tomorrow and Tuesday, before the mercury rises to 26C on Wednesday. Conditions will then cool at the end of the week and next weekend.

Looe is also braced for a heatwave, with temperatures expected to reach 28C on Tuesday. The city will see the mercury hit 25C tomorrow and 27C on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, other areas such as Falmouth, Newquay and Penzance will not meet the heatwave criteria. However, sunny weather and temperatures in the early to mid 20C can still be expected.

The Met Office said: “Heatwaves are most common in the summer when high pressure develops over an area. High pressure systems are slow moving and can persist in an area for an extended period of time, such as days or weeks.

“They can occur in the UK due to the location of the jet stream, which is usually in the north of the UK during the summer. This may allow high pressure to develop over the UK, resulting in persistent dry and stable weather.”
