Liverpool reject Wataru Endo bid as the Reds’ summer dealings remain quiet

Liverpool have been quiet in the transfer window so far this summer, but now a bid for midfielder Wataru Endo has been rejected as the transfer business looks set to begin.

Trent Alexander-Arnold on whether Klopp will take England job

Liverpool have rejected a bid for Marseille midfielder Wataru Endo – after the French club submitted a bid of around £12million for the Japan international.

New boss Roberto De Zerbi is keen to bring in the midfielder but the Reds have rejected an initial approach. There are other clubs interested in the player.

Endo, 31, only arrived at Liverpool last summer in a £16.2m deal and the Reds are not looking to offload the player.

He ended up replacing Fabinho in the no. 6 at the club after a failed move to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton. Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was a big admirer of the former Stuttgart player.

New manager Arne Slot is using the US tournament to assess his squad ahead of Liverpool making new signings. If Endo had been sold, he would certainly have to be replaced, although Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones have both played that role.

Marseille signed Mason Greenwood from Manchester United this summer, while they also brought in midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on loan from Tottenham and Ismael Kone from Watford.

Meanwhile, Harvey Elliott believes Lee Carsley could be ready to step up and take over the leadership of England’s senior team. The Liverpool striker would also be hoping it would open the door for him to break into the Three Lions squad as he still awaits a first call-up.

Elliott, 21, played under Carsley as England U21s won the European Championships last summer. The Kop midfielder came off the bench in the final as England beat Spain to win the trophy.
