Legendary Cornish opera singer Benjamin Luxon has died aged 87

Benjamin Luxon CBE died aged 87 last Thursday (July 25). He was considered one of the nation’s greatest opera singers and performed at venues such as the Royal Opera House, Teatro alla Scala and the Paris Opera.

Luxon was born in Redruth in 1937 and began his career as a member of the English Opera Group. He went on to work with some of the most famous conductors, including Benjamin Britten, and made over 100 recordings.




Luxon made his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1972. He then performed at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, where he sang the title role in Raymond Leppard’s production of Monteverdi. Return d’Ulisse to his homeland .

He was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1986 for his services to music. Around 1990, Luxon began to struggle with hearing loss, which forced the end of his career.

He then developed a career as a narrator and poetry reader. He also continued to give master classes in opera and spent the last years of his life in western Massachusetts in the U.S.
