Officers seized the dog, which is not believed to be a banned breed, and the woman’s death was reported to the coroner, West Midlands Police said. No one else was believed to have been injured.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Teams attended with police officers to find a woman in a property in a critical condition. With the help of the police, the woman was quickly removed from the property for safety reasons.

“Staff performed advanced life support but tragically, despite their best efforts, nothing could be done to save the woman and she was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. No one else was injured in the incident.”

Chief Inspector David Amos, from Coventry Police, said: “We understand this is a distressing and tragic incident and would like to thank the local community for their support and our emergency service colleagues who dealt with this incident.

“Our thoughts remain firmly with the family and loved ones of the woman who sadly died and they will inform the coroner of her death. Although the dog’s breed has not yet been confirmed, we do not believe it is a banned breed at this stage. However, a full assessment will be required before we can confirm this.”
