Leicester City are in dire need of a new striker as another may leave

If you followed Leicester City closely last season, you will know that the Foxes are definitely in need of a new striker. That fact was reinforced a few games into the preseason. What did Steve Cooper reveal when asked specifically about the possibility of signing another goalscorer?

Striker Kelechi Iheanacho has already left the King Power Stadium this summer. Will another center forward come out of LCFC this offseason? Clubs are understood to be eyeing a move for one of the East Midlanders. Will Tom Cannon soon leave Filbert Way or try to make a name for himself in the Premier League with Leicester?

Cannon joined from Everton with a ‘one for the future’ tag attached to him from the media. That assessment was correct as former Leicester manager Enzo Maresca used the 21-year-old sparingly throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

On occasion, the one-time Evertonian has not even been selected in extended day squads by the Italian. This led to a slightly unfair but equally true analysis of Cannon City’s career at an early stage. Steve Cooper’s feelings about the footballer are currently unknown. He will assess as he goes – as with all contemporary Foxes.

When Cannon turns up for LCFC, he shows signs that he could be the main man once talisman Jamie Vardy retires. If that sad day will finally come. But the rising former Toffees has yet to show enough at the King Power to fully convince fans or perhaps the outfit’s staff.

A trio of Championship teams are set to chase Fox, if a claim by journalist Alan Nixon is to be believed. Nixon suggests Sheffield United, West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City are all in the market for a striker. Cannon is supposedly on their respective wish lists; will cannon go before the start of 2024/25? I think only Cooper and the player himself could answer that question at this point.

If Cannon stays and can’t provide EPL goals, City will ask him for a separate helping of Vardy. The same goes for Patson Daka, who was generally unimpressive when he was previously in the division.

When asked if the club were looking to sign a fresh striker in the current market, Cooper coyly replied:

“We have to see how Jamie is. He’s not with us at the moment. Pato (Daka) is here and Tom (Cannon). We’re still working on that process.

We hope Jamie can come back as soon as possible because he looked so sharp before he had that knock. We all know what he can deliver next and I enjoyed working with him.

That’s where I’m at right now with this. It’s too hard to say we need this and that, because it’s about putting a puzzle together where everyone clicks. We will see.”
