The Premier League missed out on an extra place in next season’s Champions League, so which teams are in line to qualify for the European competition? Race for top four, Europa League and Europa Conference League analyzed as Aston Villa, Tottenham, Chelsea, Man Utd and Newcastle compete

It is not just the identity of the Premier League champions that will be decided in the final week of the season. Qualification for the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League is also to be determined in the final week of games.

Arsenal, the city of Manchester and Liverpool they qualified for the Champions League.

Of course, a Spurs win over Man City would give their main rivals Arsenal the lead in the title race, but that’s a whole different debate!

Who will join Tottenham or Villa in the Europa League?

Joining either Tottenham or Villa in the Europa League by their position in the league will be Chelsea, Newcastle or Manchester United.

As a parenthesis, Newcastle could still equal of Tottenham current haul of 63 points but would only overhaul Spurs if Spurs lose both of their games this week and themselves win on both Wednesday and Sunday.

But realistically the three teams to finish between sixth and eighth this season are likely to be Newcastle, Chelsea and Manchester United.

We’ll know a lot more about their final positions by 10pm on Wednesday night after Chelsea play at Brighton and Newcastle and Man Utd clash at Old Trafford, with the hosts needing to win to have any hope of finishing above his team Eddie Howe (Man Utd. goal difference is so far behind Newcastle that a draw will effectively doom Man Utd to finish no higher than seventh).

But, as explained in the next section, it is possible that only one of Chelsea and Newcastle will qualify for Europe…

But the FA Cup gives Man Utd another route to Europe, at the expense of Newcastle or Chelsea…

If the winners of the FA Cup, which will be either Manchester United or Manchester City, finish in the top five of the Premier League – and therefore qualify for the Champions League or Europa League by their league position – their place in the Europa League for FA Cup glory will be passed on to the next Premier League team not competing in Europe.

With United currently in eighth position, it means Chelsea – in seventh – would miss out on European football altogether for the second successive season if Erik ten Hag’s side lift the FA Cup.

Chelsea, however, moved level on points with sixth-placed Newcastle after their dramatic 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest, meaning they could have a one-on-one with the Magpies with two games left to secure football continental.

How does the new Champions League format work?

Taking the total number of teams in the Champions League from 32 to 36, the biggest change will result in a transformation from the traditional group stage to a single league stage that includes all participating teams.

Each club will now be guaranteed a minimum of eight games in the league stage against eight different opponents (four home, four away) rather than the previous six games against three teams, played home and away.

The top eight teams in the league will automatically qualify for the knockout stage, while the teams finishing ninth to 24th will compete in a two-legged play-off to secure their way to the last 16 of the competition.

Teams ranked 25-36 are eliminated from all competitions.

Are the Europa League and Europa Conference League also changing?

Similar changes will be made to the Europa League and Europa Conference League formats, with 36 teams each.

Europa League teams will have eight matches against eight different opponents in the league stage.

In the Europa Conference League – renamed the UEFA Conference League – teams will have six matches against six different opponents in the league stage. The UEFA Conference League matches will be played between September and December.

The knock-out phase of the competitions will take place in the second half of the season and culminate at the end of the campaign, as it does now.
