Huddersfield town center is gearing up to welcome its new skatepark for the summer

Huddersfield is set to get a new skatepark this summer.

As part of its commitment to cultural offerings for young people in Kirklees, the Children’s Art School is opening a skatepark in the former Toyland space in the Piazza Centre.

MakerSkate will offer summer sessions starting July 30 and will run every Tuesday from 12pm to 4pm until the end of August. On launch day, skaters and non-skaters alike will be able to participate in a t-shirt making session in the MakerWorld space and help create artwork for the skate ramps.

The park will then open for evening open skate sessions from September. MakerSkate is led by passionate entrepreneur Kierhardy Ansell, who has created similar successful projects, notably Skate It Yourselfat Orange Box in Halifax, supported by Calderdale Council and the local police.

From daytime lessons, which cater for all skill levels, to evening open skate sessions, MakerSkate will combine visual art, fashion and music. Led by an experienced team dedicated to empowering young people through positive engagement, the skatepark provides a safe and supportive environment.

“We’re delighted to be working with Skate it Yourself, who do such great work with young people in Calderdale,” says CEO of The Children’s Art School, Chloe Williams, “This new space will attract more children and families to our vibrant community .

We know that taking part in MakerWorld improves the wellbeing of whole families and we are committed to expanding our offerings to ensure that children in Huddersfield can experience a wide cultural education, including music and the arts.”

Williams added: “We recognize children’s right to rest, leisure, play, cultural life and the arts. By developing this space, we are creating a rich cultural community where every child can thrive.”

MakerSkate will support the mental health and community benefits associated with skateboarding, promoting resilience and inclusion among participants.

It will also provide a welcoming space in the city center for young people who are already in dire need of safe reassurance, as well as developing a visual arts offering for the skating community.
