Swindon ‘approach ex-players’ for coaching role

Swindon Town have approached former players about taking on a role in the coaching staff, according to a report from The Ink.

Town remain on the lookout for their next head coach, having been without a permanent starter since Michael Flynn parted ways with the club in mid-January.

Rumors have swirled about the possibility of Derek Adams and Dean Brennan taking over, with Barnet saying an approach for their head coach from Swindon was rejected and the role remains vacant.

However, rumors have now emerged that while looking to fill the head coaching vacancy, Town are also looking for another manager to work alongside whoever the new boss will be.

In his latest column for The Ink, Sam Morshead wrote that he was informed that Swindon were actively pursuing people to join the coaching staff and were particularly targeting candidates with a previous connection to the County Ground.

He said: “The Ink is aware that former Swindon players now in training are being contacted by the current hierarchy, including messages from majority shareholder Clem Morfuni himself, to gauge their interest in joining City. But not in a head coaching role.”

Gavin Gunning’s assistant Jimmy Shan joined at the end of March on a deal that runs until the end of this season, if this report is correct then it would make it seem unlikely that his stay will be extended.

There was a suggestion that Brennan’s approach would also involve him being an assistant head coach, although the Adverul understands that was not the case.

The search for a permanent manager continues three weeks after the end of the season, with the club’s only update on the search coming from boss Clem Morfuni’s program notes for the final game of the season against Morecambe.

Morfuni said: “We know in a number of areas we need to do better and we will always take the opportunity to learn from this campaign, ensuring we have a squad capable of challenging for promotion sooner rather than later.

“We will therefore be assessing the best management team to deliver the success we are aiming for ahead of the new season in plenty of time to allow us to plan and ensure we have the right mix of experience and youth to build a capable squad . of promotion, which remains our ambition.”
