The beach near Greater Manchester with the cheapest fish and chips in the UK

A beach near Greater Manchester is home to the UK’s cheapest fish and chips, according to new research. New Brighton, less than 90 minutes’ drive away, proved to have the friendliest fish and chips in the country at an average price of £7.76.

Southwold in the east of England was found to have the second cheapest fish and chips at £8.35. Portmeirion in Wales came third with the seaside treat setting you back £8.57.




New Brighton was also named the cheapest place for chips alone, with the average price of large chips coming in at £2.70, significantly cheaper than the most expensive destination on the list, which was Plockton in Scotland, which came to one pound. 5.30 for big chips.

The study, carried out by Capital on Tap, looked at 30 locations across the UK and looked at various factors including average store ratings, average fish and chip prices and these prices as a percentage of the average weekly wage in each area. The research found the cheapest and most expensive fish and chips, as well as ‘affordability’ rankings in relation to local wages.

When it came to affordability, New Brighton came second, just behind Southwold, with fish and chips costing just 1.07% of a weekly wage, closely matching Southwold. Portmeirion in Wales comes third for affordability, with fish and chips costing 1.2% of the average weekly wage at £8.57.

At the other end of the scale, Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire was named the most expensive place for fish and chips, costing £14.73 – which is 2.12% of the average weekly wage. Salcombe, a popular coastal holiday destination in Devon, is the second most expensive location for fish and chips in the UK.
