Huddersfield Town wrap up Austria’s pre-season training camp with a friendly win against the Serie A side

Huddersfield Town recorded a 2-1 win against US Lecce in the third and final friendly of their pre-season training camp in Austria on Sunday.

After trailing at the interval, second-half goals from Josh Koroma and Rhys Healey earned the Terriers a win against Serie A opponents Jenbach.

Town have now won five of six pre-season friendlies to date, recording wins against Emley, Guiseley, Harrogate Town and Hertha BSC and a defeat to Aris Limassol before their win over the top-flight Italian side.

The Terriers will now return to the UK before hosting Sheffield United in their final pre-season friendly on Friday, before the start of their League One campaign on August 10.

City head coach Michael Duff made eight changes from the win at Hertha BSC, with Michal Helik, Ben Wiles and Danny Ward the three players who keep their place in the squad after Thursday’s win.

US Lecce took control of the contest early on, having an early shot blocked and another that went wide.

Nikola Krstovic made several efforts in quick succession for the Serie A side, firing wide with a left-footed shot from the edge of the box, while the striker also attempted an overhead kick that went just wide of the right.

Town had a rare sight of goal midway through the half when Tom Lees headed home Antony Evans’ free-kick from the left, but their Italian counterparts continued to have the better of the game.

The Serie A side had a few more shots blocked, while Krstovic had a free-kick saved by Chris Maxwell.

The top-flight side took the lead in the 32nd minute when Krstovic broke into the penalty area and found space to the left of goal before the striker found the bottom right corner with a low shot past Maxwell.

US Lecce spurned a good chance to double their lead soon after when the Montenegrin goalscorer turned provider on this occasion to beat Balthazar Pierret, but Maxwell did well to save one-on-one.

Lees once again headed home an Evans free-kick from the right shortly before the interval as the top-flight side went into the break deservedly ahead.

The Serie A side had their first chance of the second half when Maxwell had an attempt on goal outside the box, the resulting free-kick hitting the wall.

Evans continued to remain a threat from set-pieces for Town, with the midfielder’s low free-kick cleared.

Ward then had Town’s best chance of the game up to that point when the forward crossed on goal nine minutes after the restart, but the forward’s effort with the outside of the boot was blocked by American stopper Lecce.

Duff made four changes shortly after the hour mark as Brodie Spencer, Herbie Kane, Jaheim Headley and Koroma entered the fray and Matty Pearson came on minutes later.

The Terriers found an equalizer with just over 20 minutes to play, which was reward for an improved second-half display. Headley got down the left touchline and sent the ball across goal to Koroma who slotted home from close range.

Town were gifted a golden chance to go ahead nine minutes from time when Healey was caught with a high boot in the box and a penalty was awarded, the striker sending American goalkeeper Lecce the wrong way from the spot to puts Duff’s team in the lead.

Late substitute Pat Jones fired into the side-netting for the Terriers, while Maxwell had to make two saves in the closing minutes to preserve his side’s lead as Town finished their training camp with a win.
