The player who featured for Nottingham Forest in pre-season is now set for a surprise loan move

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo is busy reshaping his squad and during pre-season many players have relished the chance to have a clean camp.

The Reds have played Chesterfield at home so far and have also played Sunderland, Millwall and Elche in Spain.

It was a bit of a mixed bag in terms of the players used in those games, but in the last two friendlies, perhaps more cohesion will be evident.

Forest would still like to move a few players, and now there could be a surprise move for a man who has been deemed surplus to requirements.

Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien is set for a surprise loan move

At one time O’Brien would have proved a wonderful signing for Forest, but now he is very low overall.

In the 2022/23 campaign, the 25-year-old was a regular during the first half of the season.

He made 14 appearances but then suffered an illness which saw him lose his place in the squad and place in the 25-man squad.

A loan move to DC United saw him link up with Wayne Rooney and he is now set for a return to MLS.

According to BBC Sport, O’Brien is now closing in on a move to LA Galaxy for the rest of the year.

It is claimed there will be a £5m purchase option in the loan deal and that would see Forest lose money on the £10m they paid for the midfielder.

O’Brien will be hoping to help the Galaxy to a second title in three years and his chances of regular football will be much better there than they would be at Forest.

O’Brien deserves a fresh start away from Forest

Eventually, the Reds player saw a number of midfielders coming at Forest and they passed him down the pecking order.

O’Brien will now have the chance to take advantage of his loan spell at Middlesbrough last season and play regular football.

The player would be a useful Forest player if they were relegated in the last two years, but as a Premier League player, the jury is out.

Given everything he’s been through since arriving at Forest, it’s hard not to feel some sympathy for O’Brien and hopefully this loan can work out for him.

The Galaxy represent a surprise loan move given his Championship credentials, but the Los Angeles lifestyle has clearly proved a massive draw for the player.
