Big ‘YES’ vote as residents give green light to £500m estate regeneration scheme to deliver 1,700 homes in Canning Town – Newham Council

Big ‘YES’ vote as residents give green light to £500m estate regeneration scheme to deliver 1,700 homes in Canning Town – Newham Council

• Following a two-year co-production process, almost 70% of local residents voted yes to Newham Council’s regeneration plans for the Canning Town Estate;
• Canning Town’s estate regeneration scheme is the third positive result of the estate regeneration vote as part of Newham Council’s ambitious Affordable Homes for Newham programme.

Canning Town’s estate regeneration scheme has won resounding support from local residents after 69.9% of residents voted ‘YES’ in the month-long poll which ended this week. Of those eligible to participate, there was a 56.6% turnout; meaning the majority of local residents have given the green light to an ambitious delivery of up to 1,700 new homes, including 50% truly energy affordable homes, with 500 new family homes, community facilities and public and green spaces improved in the neighborhood.

Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, said: “The Canning Town estate is the third largest of the estates I promised to deliver when I became mayor in 2018. I am very pleased with the result as it shows that local residents trust their council to deliver the things that matter more for them. . The result shows that we have overwhelming support from the community who are ready to see positive change in a neighborhood that has been left behind for too long. Now we will tackle local area improvements and build much needed homes that our people can afford. I look forward to continuing to work closely with residents and bringing to life our vision for an improved neighborhood and well-designed, high-quality homes that our people can afford.”

“Working hand-in-hand with local Canning Town residents who have been involved in co-producing the exciting masterplan, we will deliver 1,700 new homes, 50% of which will be truly affordable. There will be 500 new family homes with 3 bedrooms or more, improved public realm including communal gardens and play spaces for everyone to enjoy. All homes are spacious and energy efficient as part of our climate change action plan, which will also mean cheaper bills.”

The “Yes” vote of confidence is a key milestone in Mayor Fiaz’s ambition to provide good quality housing for local people in safe and well-connected neighbourhoods; and the 1,700 homes are in addition to the 147 new truly affordable homes Newham Council is already building on the estate as part of its Affordable Homes for Newham programme.

Following the positive vote from residents, work will now be accelerated to submit the masterplan application to the Local Planning Authority later this year. In addition to the development plans, the Council’s community wealth building ‘Place’ team will continue to work with Canning Town’s resident steering group to continue progress on co-produced plans and a range of community engagement initiatives.
