‘Warning’ issued to drivers who obtained their driving license before the theory test became law

A recent survey found that nine percent of older drivers do not know the national speed limit on a highway. New research has revealed differences between older and younger drivers in terms of their knowledge of road laws and traffic rules.

Surprisingly, this research shows that older drivers, even those who got their license before the theory test was introduced in the 1990s, may need to refresh their understanding of the rules of driving. Nineteen percent of drivers age 55 and older could not identify the purpose of triangular road signs, while sixteen percent could not determine the proper lights for highway driving.

Additionally, twenty-seven percent of older drivers did not know the correct action to take if forced to decelerate quickly on a motorway, the Express reported. Connor Campbell, an expert at Independent Advisor Car Insurance, expressed his concern, saying: “With fixed penalty notices having seen a sharp rise since the 2022 code change, it is also essential to regularly review the Highway Code to make sure you are up to date. with the latest traffic laws.

He found it “shocking” that so many drivers were unfamiliar with basic driving rules. “This is vital to refresh your knowledge and will help you avoid large fines and costly penalty points,” reports Birmingham Live.

The survey showed that only 13% of drivers over the age of 55 were able to answer all the questions correctly, while only 10% of those aged 17 to 24 did the same. Alarmingly, 67% of drivers in this demographic failed to answer at least four questions correctly, with one in ten getting each answer wrong.
