DR DR LIVE IN MANCHESTER – WHAT HAPPENED?

On a surprisingly sunny night, DR DR, and a host of talented supporters, took to The Star and Garter for an electrifying gig, showcasing some of the best up and coming bands Manchester has to offer.

The first support took it stage after stage, commanding the room with their immense melodies and suave style. Although new to the Manchester scene, having only been a band for just over a year, their tight performance and harmonious interplay with the band screams professionalism of the highest order. They’ve also been quick to release three explosive tracks – Subconscious, C’est La Vie and All the Time – all worth a listen if you’re in need of a mid-00s indie fix.

The Molotovs brought a cockney charm to the small northern venue, sensational in their 60s jumpsuits and suits that earned them international recognition and over 38,000 Instagram followers. The band consists of brothers Matthew and Issey, a pair so cool that everyone in Soho knows their names and energetic drummer Ice.

They played a well-curated selection of covers and soon-to-be-released singles, bringing the punk Sex Pistols back in an explosive and unapologetic set. It’s clear that this band is destined for greatness; they exude star quality and have this clear addiction to advancement in the industry. It’s not every day that Pete Doherty calls your band “goddamn ace”, so I’m with Pete on this one – the Molotovs are a band to watch.

Finally, DR DR took the stage, in a leather vest, the tattoo singer towered over his people, we were all in the palm of his hand. Pure force and unstoppable power is the only way to describe the band, a cacophony of catchy guitar riffs and dissonant melodies. Playing a varied mix of new and old releases, ‘Concussion’, the title track from their 2023 EP, had the whole room jumping to its punishing bass line and dark lines.

As the set progressed the songs got more intense, driving the crowd into a frenzy that peaked on “Cerebral Hypoxia”, if heavy electric guitar presence is your thing – DR DR do it best. The lyrical landscape they create is menacing and violent, exploring addiction, depression and psychological imprisonment (a notable song is “Black Gold”), yet there’s a certain satisfaction gained from the blatant honesty in their performance. From crowd surfing to mosh pits, this concert dug into the depths of true heavy metal and was riveting from start to finish.

With manic energy and masterful command, DR DR doesn’t just lead the crowd, he orchestrates a symphony of mayhem that leaves everyone in tatters.
