Anthony Gordon is the latest to move as Liverpool talks ‘revived’ amid clear Newcastle stance

With Fulham re-signing Ryan Sessegnon on a free transfer, Liverpool are now the only Premier League club yet to complete a signing this summer. That’s not to say the Reds haven’t tried to recruit, of course.

New head coach Arne Slot continues to get to know the players he inherited and are already in the Liverpool squad. It is feasible that there will be men on the list who will get more chances than they got under Jürgen Klopp.

But that obviously doesn’t stop sporting director Richard Hughes from recruiting fresh blood. He spoke in Slot’s first press conference about the club’s “opportunistic” approach to the transfer market. Liverpool’s failed bid for Anthony Gordon was a perfect example of such a move, with Newcastle having to raise funds. Now, the saga may have been reignited.

Sources have reportedly informed Caught Offside that a new round of negotiations has begun between the Reds and Newcastle. To recap what happened before, it was claimed that Jarell Quansah was going to be included as part of the deal. Liverpool were unwilling to lose their most promising young centre-back to fill a position for which they already have wide coverage.

Caught Offside also noted that the Magpies are opposed to the sale. However, the club seem willing to listen to what Liverpool have to say, so perhaps a deal remains a possibility.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe got his head around the issue last week. “Anthony Gordon is a crucial player for us, we didn’t want to lose anyone,” he said (via Fabrizio Romano). “Why would we want to lose our best players? We fought very hard to make the right decisions. The last few weeks have been very, very difficult. But Gordon will be fine.”
