Sheffield Eagles suspend Mark Aston with RFL investigation ongoing

Sheffield Eagles have suspended long-serving head coach Mark Aston, as well as their physio, due to an RFL investigation into a “medical compliance matter”. Aston, who masterminded the club’s 1998 Challenge Cup victory over Wigan Warriors, has been suspended without fault pending an Operational Rules Tribunal.

Aston has been the club’s head coach since 2007 and has overseen the club’s transition to one of the Championship’s top teams, winning back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013, as well as the 1895 Cup in 2019.

Sheffield are currently enjoying another strong season and are third in the Championship, just one point behind second-placed Toulouse. However, they will now continue their play-off push without Aston, at least in the short term.
