Leeds Rhinos have confirmed that Rhsye Martin will leave the club at the end of the season, with the second striker’s contract set to expire.

It would be expected that Martin would have been at the top of the list of players to keep, but they have now confirmed that the Papua New Guinea international will leave at the end of the season.

Leeds Rhinos shared a statement via their social media and club website to confirm the news.

It reads: “Leeds Rhinos have confirmed that Rhyse Martin will leave the club at the end of the season.

“Martin joined the Rhinos in June 2019 from the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, initially on a two-and-a-half-year deal, and went on to make over 120 appearances for the club. He won the Betfred Challenge Cup final with the team in 2020 and played in the 2022 Grand Final.”

It brings to an end his five-year run during which he scored almost 1,000 points, with the goal-striker equaling the world record for consecutive strikes while playing for Leeds Rhinos.

As part of the club’s statement, Director of Rugby Ian Blease commented on Martin’s exit. Securing a new deal for Martin will surely be among Blease’s top priorities when he takes over.

At the time, reports indicated that both Warrington Wolves and Leigh Leopards were circling for the second rower.

Leeds Rhinos sporting director Ian Blease said: “We are disappointed that Rhyse will be leaving us at the end of the season. Rhyse’s contract is up this year and we were keen to keep him here and made him an improved offer a few weeks ago, however last week he let us know he intends to move on and take an opportunity elsewhere.

“Rhyse is a great professional and will continue to be employed with the Rhinos squad until the end of the season. We have eight games left in the regular season and I know he will do everything he can for his team and play his part in helping us achieve our ambitions to reach the play-offs. He was an outstanding player and I would like to thank him for his service to the Rhinos.”
