“No one has a complete picture” of the incident, says Manchester’s mayor

The mayor of Greater Manchester said “no one has the full picture” of the incident at Manchester Airport earlier this week.

Andy Burnham urged people to “step back” and allow authorities to carry out their investigations after Manchester Evening News released new footage Saturday that showed an officer allegedly kicking and stomping on a man while he was lying face down during an arrest.

He told Sky News’ Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips: “It’s a complicated situation, a very violent situation actually, and there were issues on both sides.

“That’s why I’ve asked other people not to rush to judgment because of the complexity of it and simply to everyone who has their say, no one has all the facts. No one has the full picture.”

Asked when a conclusion could be reached by the Independent Police Conduct Office, Mr Burnham said: “I know it’s frustrating in the world we live in, everyone wants instant conclusions, but that’s not how life is, is it?

“We have, in the last days, people making complete judgments on one side or the other. You pick a side in this whole thing and the truth always lies somewhere in the middle.

“Life is more complicated than people sometimes make it out to be on social media.”

The mayor said the incident took place in three stages, with an earlier dispute taking place on a plane before the footage was seen by the public.

The family lawyer at the center of the controversy announces that he is stepping down

The lawyer for the family at the center of the Manchester Airport controversy has announced he is standing down.

Akhmed Yakoob claimed 19-year-old Muhammed Fahir was the victim of an “assassination attempt” that left him “fighting for his life”, in an interview with LBC.

After his comments attracted criticism, Mr Yakoob, director of Birmingham firm Maurice Andrews Solicitors, accused the media of trying to “sabotage” him.

Speaking to reporters from the back of a car Sunday night, The guardian reported that he said: “You may have seen the various media reports about me over the past couple of days.

“The media tried to sabotage me. It’s not the first time they’ve done this though, but they’ve made this whole situation about me rather than police brutality and police misconduct, which is unfair to the Greater Manchester police and family.

“So, after consulting with the family, I have decided to step aside for the time being and have referred the family to a lawyer. But I’ll keep an eye on it.”
