Super League attendance figures see Wigan Warriors v Warrington Wolves draw huge numbers

Round 19 of the Super League could be looked back on as one of the most significant of the season, with Wigan Warriors knocked out of first place by opponents Warrington Wolves in a game worthy of the biggest attendance of the round.

Wigan hosted Warrington Wolves on the back of a defeat against lowly Hull FC, but Matt Peet’s side failed to respond as they fell to an “embarrassing” 40-4 defeat.

Such a margin of victory meant that Warrington went top of Super League and, due to results elsewhere, Wigan could not even hang on to second place, with Hull KR’s 40-16 win over London enough good to relegate Peet’s team to third place.

The third game on that Friday night of extreme results saw the most significant of all, as St Helens slipped to a fifth straight league defeat for the first time since 1986, while Leigh Leopards ran in eight tries to to win 46-4.

Paul Wellens’ side have been dealt another blow with a serious injury to Jack Welsby as their injury crisis worsened and they slipped to sixth, just two points ahead of Leeds Rhinos who kept their playoff hopes alive- ul with a 34-6 win over Huddersfield Giants.

The two teams to overtake Saints in fourth and fifth respectively were the Catalans who beat Hull FC 24-16 and Salford who beat Castleford 30-22 with Bens costing Craig Lingard’s side .

So while the Super League action in round 19 was intense, what about the crowds to watch and the attendance numbers?

Unsurprisingly, the match between the first and second Super League sides attracted the biggest ever attendance, with 15,764 watching Sam Burgess’ side storm the top of the table. That game was the only one to record a five-figure crowd.

Close to five figures was the Stade Gilbert Brutus crowd and 9,214 turned out to witness the return of Sam Tomkins, although many cheered with a strong contingent of Hull FC fans who traveled to Perpignan.

Two Super League games failed to achieve such high attendance figures, even failing to reach 5,000, with Huddersfield v Leeds only 4,924 and, worryingly, Salford v Cas just over 3,000.

Hull KR don’t report their Super League attendance numbers on a weekly basis, rather a three-monthly report from their supporters’ meeting, but they tend to be very well supported at Craven Park.

Meanwhile, more than 8,000 people witnessed Leigh’s stellar performance against Saints as Adrian Lam’s side desperately cling to any hope of making the play-offs.
