‘Explosion’ just before 3am wakes people in Pontefract

A charging noise described as an “explosion” woke people shortly before 3am in the Pontefract area of ​​West Yorkshire, according to reports.

People living in New Hall Road and nearby Nevison Avenue reported hearing a loud bang and others in Upton, about seven miles away, also said they heard a loud noise or noises. There have also been reports on social media of people hearing something in Featherstone.




One woman, commenting on social media, said she was woken up by what sounded like “very loud” fireworks. The exact time of the explosion was not immediately clear, with one woman suggesting 2.50am and another saying it was around 1.30am. Some said they heard a bang, others suggested it was more.

An Upton woman said she thought they were fireworks because she had found the remains of three fireworks in a field. However, one woman said fireworks had been set off in Upton but much earlier at around 9pm. Several people have shared their experiences on the Pontefract Community Facebook Page. A person who lives near Pontefract Castle said he heard it and claimed it left a “stink” behind.

Yorkshire Live contacted West Yorkshire Police to see if there were any reports. A police spokeswoman said she had not been made aware of anything and there did not appear to be anything on the police logs for New Hall Road or Nevison Avenue.

In October 2021, a similar incident woke residents and scared pets in the Pontefract area. Home surveillance cameras captured the loud noise and a flash of light.
