STAIR in Birmingham is looking for volunteers to train BCS students

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A Birmingham non-profit organization is helping first and second graders improve their literacy, but they can’t do it alone.

STAIR of Birmingham is looking for volunteers to partner with students to tutor them in reading in select Birmingham city schools.

STAIR is about starting your reading adventure. Through their program, students achieved a 23-31 percent increase in phonics and spelling skills, according to STAIR’s director of volunteer engagement, Destiny Askew. But, they need more volunteers to continue helping the students. STAIR asks volunteers to commit one hour per week for one semester, spending time with the same student each week. Volunteers will receive one hour of training before being paired with a student.

“Our goal is to get about 400 volunteers this year, so that they’re taking care of at least about 200 students,” said Destiny Askew, STAIR’s director of volunteer engagement. “But we still need about 200 volunteers.”

To apply to volunteer you can do so at www.stairbirmingham.org/tutor.
