A couple and five of their grandchildren escaped a house fire early Monday morning in Nottingham Township.

Finleyville Fire Department Chief Jacob Lawrence said crews were called shortly before 2 a.m. to the 200 block of Hamtom Road. Upon arrival, firefighters found the two-story home fully engulfed in flames.

All seven people inside the home were outside when first responders arrived.

“They were sleeping. The grandchildren notified the grandparents about the fire,” Lawrence said.

According to Lawerence, one man suffered minor burns and was taken to the hospital by a family member and later released.

Lawrence said the home’s location at the top of a hill accessible by a long driveway made it difficult to get water to the fire.

“I was on site until 7am. We had some assistance from the Nottingham Township road crew,” Lawrence said.

Firefighters are investigating. It is not known how the fire started.

Fire departments from North Strabane, Valley Inn, Peters Township, Library, Bentleyville, Ellsworth and South Strabane also responded to the fire.
