Croydon tennis courts reopen after stunning refurbishment – Newsroom

Croydon’s newly refurbished Park Tennis Courts have officially reopened for local communities to enjoy following a £600,000 refurbishment project.

Croydon Council has worked with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) Parks Tennis Project to transform 32 courts into 14 Croydon Parks to provide better facilities for all ages and abilities.

Renovations include resurfacing, repainting, new fencing, netting, gates and a reservation system to ensure the yards are sustainable for residents to enjoy for years to come.

All courts in Croydon can be booked through the LTA website. People can enjoy Barclays Free Park tennis sessions on Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends, as well as practice sessions at Purley Sports Club.

The refurbishment project sees an investment of £558,453 by the LTA Tennis Foundation as part of the Park Tennis project, delivered by the LTA, while Croydon is investing £66,723. In total, over half a million pounds is being invested to upgrade borough courts to bring them up to standard for the benefit of local communities.

Jason Perry, Chief Executive of Croydon, attended the launch event for the reopening of the tennis courts at Trumble Gardens in Thornton Heath on Saturday 20 July with representatives from the LTA and GLL.

During the fun-filled event, residents took part in free tennis practice sessions where anyone could pick up a racket and hit the court to test their skills.

The renovations are part of the LTA’s biggest ever investment in parkland tennis facilities across the UK, with millions going towards the transformation of thousands of courts. The income generated from the cheap court booking fees will be reinvested to ensure they are maintained at their new high standard for many years to come.

Residents can also volunteer as Barclays Free Park Tennis Activators at neighborhood courts by completing the LTA’s free online training course.
