Chairman reveals Birmingham City transfer bids as ‘would blow everyone out of the water’

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony admits Birmingham City are blowing their League One rivals “out of the water” with their spending in this summer’s transfer window. The Blues have signed eight players for new boss Chris Davies to work with, but they are not done yet and have plans for more signings next month.

Posh lost out to Oxford United, who were eventually promoted, in the League One play-offs at the end of last season, but they have developed a reputation for operating the market smartly and selling players at prices big over the years. It was no different this summer, with Blues-linked Harrison Burrows moving to Sheffield United and Ronnie Edwards joining Southampton.

MacAnthony will make money available to manager Darren Ferguson as a result, but the chairman admits the Blues are spending far beyond what Peterborough and other third-tier sides are able to commit to – and also revealed the club have come calling in this summer though the Blues favorite and favourite. The dapper director of football, Barry Fry, gave them some work to do.

“Birmingham City are blowing everyone out of the water financially, but good luck to them. That’s the business we’re in and if we were a club of this size, that’s exactly what we’d do,” MacAnthony said on the Hard Truth podcast. “If they bid between £6m and £7m for Stansfield, then fair play.

“They contacted Barry Fry about four of our players this summer but Barry kept telling them ‘no’ – but I honestly think with the support they have they could do an Ipswich and get back to the Premier League, regardless of the championship. .

“Maybe not back-to-back like Ipswich, but certainly in four years time I expect to see them back in the top flight, but we’ve faced big League One clubs before and beaten them to promotion. It’s just another challenge for us.”
