Leicestershire Police officer charged with multiple offences

A Leicestershire police officer has been charged with a number of offences, including sharing images from incidents he attended. Special Agent William Heggs also faces charges of misconduct in public office.

Heggs was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) after an investigation was launched by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). He is alleged to have committed various crimes between January 2021 and November 2021.




The IOPC, which began its investigation into Heggs in November 2021, alleges the special agent shared footage and information from police systems. Footage from the incidents he was involved in is also believed to have been shared.

The IOPC investigation follows a mandatory referral by Leicestershire Police. The IOPC investigation led to the CPS laying charges against the special agent.

In a statement, the IOPC said Heggs faces one count of misconduct in public office and nine counts of unauthorized computer access under the Computer Misuse Act 1990. The officer also faces three allegations of unlawfully obtaining or disclosing personal data under the Data Protection Act 2018. .

Heggs is due to appear at Leicester Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (Wednesday, July 31).
