Met Office warns UK households with plans ‘from Thursday onwards’

The Met Office has issued a warning to Britons heading to parks, beaches and green spaces amid Britain’s heat wave. Despite temperatures reaching 32C amid sweltering heat and growing conditions, the Met Office says it could END on Thursday.

A mini heatwave of 32C could be whipped up by storms – so forecasters are warning people not to make plans. The highest temperatures this afternoon will be in London (32°C) and the South East (31°C), while the South West (29°C) and Midlands (28°C) will also see hot and dry conditions.

The UK’s Health Security Agency has issued a yellow health alert for parts of the country. David Oliver, Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Thursday’s heaviest showers could see 20-30mm of rain in an hour, daily totals could reach up to 90mm if more showers impact in same location.

“Lightning and hail present additional hazards with disruption possible for some.” The BBC Weather Outlook for Thursday further adds: “Thursday will turn unsettled for much of Wales and England as scattered thunderstorms develop from the morning, lasting into the evening. Ireland and Scotland.

“Shower in the west on Friday, spreading eastwards later. Showers in the north on Saturday, sunnier further south”. The Met Office says: “Dry with sunny spells, increasing risk of heavy showers in the south on Thursday. Friday and Saturday with sunshine and showers around.”

There could be power cuts and other services for some homes and businesses could be lost, the Met Office says. Flooding of homes and businesses could occur quickly, with some buildings damaged by floodwaters, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds, it adds.

Rapid flow or deep flooding is possible, causing danger to life.
