Five Manchester Music Artists We’ve Been Listening To

Summer is finally here, the sun is actually shining pretty consistently, the pints, gigs and festivals are flowing like the Irwell and, as always, Manchester’s music is looking great on all fronts.

If this is your first time jumping into this monthly series, firstly, welcome and secondly, the premise is pretty simple: we highlight the best Manchester artists coming out of 0161, whether it’s a new rising star, an unknown creative, or someone finally breaking into more people’s playlists.

Better yet, we cover stuff from all over the local scene and this time you’re in for a treat as we’ve got a lot of genres in the mix because we’re anything but eclectic.

So, without further ado – here are the five Music from Manchester artists I listened to throughout the month of July.

The best new music coming out of Greater Manchester this month

1. mantle

First up on our list this month is a lesser-known solo artist and producer Mantle but, trust us, its well-kept secret status won’t last long; this guy is blowing up all over social media and TikTok especially. Born in Japan, raised in Skipton and now based in 0161, he leads the rise of ‘bedroom pop’.

The indie alt-pop songwriter and songwriter will strike a chord with anyone enjoying the likes of Dominic Fike, Dijon, Easy Life, Kenny Beats, Matt Champion and Mk.Gee, while also wowing audiences with behind the scenes of his creation. low-budget videos and its mix of indie, hip-hop, neo-soul and more.

Manta doesn’t have a song as catchy as ‘wishful thinking’ (see below), but his 2021 debut ‘Dream World’ is still his most played song, and understandably so, but we also like ‘Clementine ” – plus, with only two EPs to go, you can catch up on their discography before it explodes.

2. Seb Lowe

Next up is a name we’ve been showing a lot of love for a while now and having seen it live twice now, we can confirm Seb Lowe and co. gives us exactly the kind of energy you’d expect from any young artist/band looking to stand out from the ever-saturated Manc music crowd.

Specializing not only in a unique blend of indie alt rock and punk, but Oldham-Born Musician has all the poetic sociopolitical poise of a modern Billy Bragg, only with more shades of John Cooper Clarke if he was on fast forward and all the “insert modern post-punk act here” aggression.

As much as there are plenty of layers sonically—perhaps especially Kate Couriel’s violin—he often shines most when it’s just him, his acoustic guitar and his emphatic world singing front and center. “Terms and Conditions” is essential listening, “Kill Him (He’s a Socialist)” perfectly sums up his blossoms, and new single “5168 Days” feels like a snapshot of the spirit you just do. have to hear.

3. KTNA

A much smoother sound to the ears, R’n’B duo of twin sisters Hope and Millie Katana may have been born in Kenya, but they were raised right here in Manchester and helped bring that culture to date. their music, winning the mayor’s first artist of the month last year.

From the East African influences woven throughout the drum beats, the irresistible soul in their voices that saw them chosen by the one and only Janelle Monáe for her three night residency at Aviva Studiosto the sheer style they bring to fashion and their presence on stage, they are the complete package.

Their second album in 2021 Renaissance may be one of the most relaxing things you’ll ever listen to, and we could really recommend every track on it, but for variety’s sake, we’ll pick ‘Summer Never Dies’, ‘Can’t Stop It’ and ‘Smile ” – all incredible songs and equally good entry points.

4. Medulla

There are some obvious comparisons to be made to the likes of Little Simz in the rap, only with a lot more Nordic familiarity, but there are flavors of fellow Brits RAE and LayFullStop, American contemporaries like Lexa Gates at times and even Misha B in certain singing sections. .

With that distinct UK delivery style, the 24-year-old Manchester MC Medulla regularly changes the flow, no matter how vibey and effortless the song itself is, probably becoming one of our favorites not only in the domestic hip-hop space, but also among female artists coming out of the city.

Her song with Sakara titled “Silly” sounds like SZA meets PinkPantheress with a dash of modern afrobeats, the version of “Night Trip” with angelic harmonies from vocalist Manc Prima always hits the right ear, but it just has to start with “Mish Muulla”. ‘. We also can’t get enough of her entire visual aesthetic – exhibit A:

5. The mouse outfit

And in one of those moments we always love, the fifth and final pick for Manchester’s rising artists we’ve been listening to this month, we came across local hip-hop collective and production team. Mouse outfit simply by listening to their song with Meduulla, “Limbo” – one of their many collaborators.

One of her most loved songs to date, it’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this batch, who have been quietly releasing some of the best, most nostalgic and varied beats on the scene since 2011. We put these . category boys once you hear them you can’t help but go deep.

You could play with any of their music crowds that might tickle your brain. We won’t pretend to be complete experts as relatively new fans, but we’d start with ‘Step Steadier’, then the jazzy ‘Know My Face’ before trying ‘Feeling High’, featuring two more Manchester artists. in King of the Underground, KinKai, and Lisbon-born rising star IAMDDB.
