These weapons have seen US military action over the past decade

24/7 Wall St. Perspectives

  • 2010-2020 was an important decade for the US military, marked by technological modernization and new advances in cyber warfare, drones and artificial intelligence.
  • During this period, several new models of weapons were also produced, equipped to assist forces deployed in the Middle East and other areas of the world.

The 2010s saw several changes in the US military, including wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, a focus on counterterrorism operations, and a shift toward modernization to compete with China and Russia. These various challenges have required the development of new weapons and technologies, with significant advances in areas such as drones, artificial intelligence and cyber warfare. The 2010s were marked by a trend towards improving the efficiency, reliability and modularity of firearms to meet the challenges of modern warfare. (These are the newest weapons to see daily use by the US military.)

As United States forces spread throughout the Middle East during this period, feedback from soldiers on the ground strongly influenced the design of many of the small arms produced. Additionally, sniper rifles, shotguns, and machine guns could be adapted to whatever scenario might arise, be it long-range engagements or urban combat.

To identify US military weapons introduced in the 2010s, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed a small arms catalog from Military Factory, an online database of military vehicles, weapons and aircraft. I have ordered these guns in alphabetical order. I have also included additional information on the type of small arm, year introduced, manufacturer, firing action, caliber and feed.

The Remington MSR (Modular Sniper Rifle), for example, was one of the sniper rifles that was used during this period. Entered service in 2013, the Remington MSR is a highly adaptable rifle that could change caliber or barrel length in a fairly short period of time. The rifle can be chambered for .338 Lapua Magnum cartridges, as well as .338 Norma Magnum, .300 Winchester Magnum and the standard 7.62x51mm NATO cartridges. It has a maximum effective firing range of only one mile. Given its versatility, this sniper rifle was regularly used by special operations units, as its modularity could adapt to whatever mission was at hand. (These are 30 firearms used by the US Navy.)
