David Copperfield’s lawsuit claims he trashed a NYC penthouse

Famous magician David Copperfield is being sued by the board of his New York apartment, who claim he destroyed his penthouse after moving in in 2018 and left it to “degenerate into a total state of disrepair” .

Copperfield owns — and is currently trying to sell — the largest unit in the Galleria, which it purchased for $7.4 million in 1997, according to the suit.

But now, unrepaired water damage in his unit poses structural hazards to the building and other residents, the suit claims.

The board also alleges in its lawsuit that a faulty valve exclusively serving the Copperfield unit resulted in “approximately $2,500,000 in damage to the condominium’s common elements and elevator systems.”

The lawsuit requires Copperfield to repair the unit and pay for damages.

Photos included in the suit show what appears to be a rusted bathtub and crumbling walls.

“This is a simple insurance claim,” a representative for Copperfield told Business Insider in a statement. “The photos included in the lawsuit do not reflect the current condition of the apartment. This is a judicial matter and will be dealt with in court.”

Joshua Stricoff, an attorney for the Galleria, told BI that the photos speak for themselves and added that the board hopes Copperfield moves past the building and its facility.

A damage assessment was sent to Copperfield earlier this year, according to the lawsuit, at which time he made “protective repairs” but did not address “subsurface damage/damage, structural stability and mold growth.”

This isn’t the first time the condo board has clashed with Copperfield. In 2015, his rooftop pool exploded due to plastic plumbing, according to the lawsuit, which it claims led to extensive flooding and water damage.
