Man charged with OUI in reading after crossing into oncoming traffic

READING, MA — A man was arrested on OUI charges after reports that his car swerved into oncoming traffic Saturday, according to police.

Police received reports that a gray Volvo hatchback was seen swerving into the oncoming lane of traffic on Main Street (Rt. 28) in the area of ​​Forest Glen Road. The Volvo also ran a red light and stopped at a green light.

Police conducted a traffic stop. Officers smelled a strong odor of marijuana from the vehicle. The driver was arrested after failing field sobriety tests, according to police.

The driver, a 20-year-old North Andover man, was charged with OUI, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation and expired inspection sticker violation. He was held pending arraignment in Woburn District Court.

“The Reading Police Department takes road safety very seriously and we will continue to aggressively patrol our streets and respond to all reports of suspicious or erratic drivers,” Reading Police Chief David Clark said in a statement. “I would also like to thank the public who reported this incident and helped get a dangerous driver off the road. We encourage our community that if they see something, they come forward and that’s what happened in this situation.”
