United Way of Bristol is seeking applications for food, shelter program

The City of Bristol Virginia received federal funds made available through the Department of Homeland Security/Federal Emergency Management Agency under the National Emergency Food and Shelter Program.

It was selected to receive $14,400 in SSA Phase 41 to supplement the city’s emergency food and shelter programs.

The selection was made by a national board that is chaired by FEMA of the US Department of Homeland Security and consists of representatives from the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, the National Council of Churches of Christ USA, the Jewish Federations of North America, Salvation Army and United Way Worldwide.

The local council was tasked with distributing funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas of the country.

A local council will determine how funds awarded to the city of Bristol, Virginia will be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area.

The local council is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this phase of the program.

Under the terms of the grant from the national council, the local agencies chosen to receive funds must be private voluntary non-profit organizations or government units; be eligible to receive federal funds; have an accounting system; practice non-discrimination; have demonstrated ability to provide emergency food and/or shelter programs and, if a private volunteer organization, have a volunteer board. Eligible agencies are encouraged to apply.
