The Eagles say they won’t trade Sam Bradford, and now their quarterback situation is a mess

Philadelphia Eagles executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman says the team will not trade Sam Bradford despite a situation that appears to be getting uglier by the day.

Roseman was a guest on ESPN Radio’s “Mike & Mike” and was asked if the team would try to trade their starting quarterback after he asked to be dealt last week. His answer could not have been clearer: The Eagles will not trade Bradford.

“No,” Roseman said when asked if the Eagles would trade Bradford. “We’re going to do what’s in the best interest of our team.”

Roseman said if something comes up that makes the Eagles a better team, they would be open to a deal. He emphasized, however, that the Eagles were happy with the quarterbacks they had, saying, “We’re very comfortable with where we are at the quarterback position.”

Tom Condon, Bradford’s agent, confirmed the quarterback has requested a trade and will skip voluntary workouts after the Eagles acquired the second pick in the NFL draft with the clear intention of selecting a quarterback. The Eagles did select quarterback Carson Wentz from North Dakota.

The Eagles would likely want Bradford to mentor the rookie for a year. But it’s now unclear whether that will happen, and the Eagles could be forced to change their plan on the fly.

Things got so bad that multiple reports say Bradford has cut off communication with the team, with head coach Doug Pederson telling Philly.com he reached out to Bradford and still hasn’t heard back.

Oddly enough, this seemed to be news to Roseman. Asked on ESPN Radio about his latest conversation with Bradford and his agent, Roseman said: “I talked to both of them. We’ve all spoken to Sam personally and I’m in constant communication with Tom.”

However, in the next question, Roseman was asked if it was true that Bradford was not responding to calls and texts. Roseman’s response suddenly painted a much different picture.

“You know, I haven’t talked to him,” Roseman said. “I haven’t contacted him. So I should probably go talk to some people here and ask them the same question.”

Either Roseman isn’t telling the truth about talking to Bradford, or he simply doesn’t know if anyone has talked to the trade-demanding starting quarterback and threatening not to return — or it could be both. Neither of those scenarios sound good for the Eagles heading into training camp.
